A Teen's Perspective
Teens don't experience cities the same way adults do. A few minutes' walk or bike ride can feel unsafe, exciting, frustrating, or inspiring. Explore cities through their lens.
NetAScore4Teens is a child-centred mobility assessment model and interactive geovisualization dashboard that evaluates how well city streets support children's independent walking and cycling. Built by adapting NetAScore, an open-source, segment-based walkability and bikeability model, it computes street-level scores entirely from OpenStreetMap data.
The model uses OSM-based indicators and attributes such as pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and road category, alongside new indicators specifically informed by literature and participatory workshops with teenagers: street lighting, play and outdoor space, comfort facilities, attractiveness, and eating facilities. Each new indicator was translated from what young people expressed valuing about their everyday streets into specific, measurable OSM tags.
The resulting scores are visualized through an interactive dashboard, allowing planners, researchers, and decision-makers to explore street-segment-level walkability and bikeability, and to identify where cities currently fall short of supporting children's independent mobility.
